This two-piece installation integrates a bas relief wall piece of a geisha offering tea to a cantankerous man who raises his tea cup demanding tea. The Edo era Japanese Kabuki theater was played by stereotyped characters who used exaggeration to show their feelings through painted faces, dance, music and voice.

The Covid-19 pandemic has necessitated “self-sheltering” – quarantining ourselves from others. As do butterflies, we long to be free from our “cocoons” giving us a basic sense of well-being and independence.

After shows an old woman who survived the horrific realities of human trafficking. I have set-up a dynamic tension in her posture, facial expression and choice of color to express her extreme despair.

6 ‘: These two distraught figures are earnestly reaching for each other but are unable to touch. To protect ourselves and the community from the Covid-19 virus, we had to "socially distance,” denying us the most human/animal need to be physically connected.
Kodama, the Japanese term for “spirits”, live within trees protecting them from harm. However, when a spirit, “kami”, becomes angry, it can cause great destruction: global forest fires.
